Dermal Fillers

Most dermal fillers in use are made of hyaluronic acid. A molecule that is found commonly in the soft tissues of the human body. A more appropriate name for dermal fillers might have been dermal lifters as the products are predominantly used to create lift in areas of the face that have lost structural integrity through aging. Judicious architectural support of the skin can create a beautiful lift without an inflated appearance. Newer generations of dermal fillers are combining technologies to not only provide immediate lift but create excellent collagen synthesis that continues for months after the treatment. Exciting treatment modalities have been developed that can now significantly improve skin hydration and elasticity without adding volume.

Dermal fillers are not without their risks and should always be administered by an experienced medical practitioner with an in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy and safe injection techniques.

Minimal bruising and swelling are the most common risks. Rarely filler can cause granulation tissue or lumps and it can also become infected. In most cases this can be easily managed with antibiotics and or dissolving the filler. Blockage of blood vessels by filler is very rare but can cause significant damage to the tissues of the face and eye if not recognized and managed urgently. The risks of fillers can be significantly reduced by preparing well for appointments, strictly following aftercare instructions and only consulting practitioners that are skilled and trained in safe injection techniques.

Key uses and benefits:

Dermal fillers can be very effective at rejuvenating the areas of the face that have been subjected to volume loss through aging or are genetically low in volume and structure.

Midface rejuvenation is not only effective in combating an appearance of fatigue but can be the first step in redefining a jawline.

Jawline reshaping uses comprehensive techniques to beautify and rejuvenate the jawline and to combat skin laxity that contribute to jowls and an appearance of sadness around the mouth.

Skin elasticity and hydration can be significantly improved by treatment of the superficial layers of skin with hyaluronic acid skin boosters ( Juvederm Volite and Profhilo) . This dramatically improves the vibrancy of the skin and creates an appearance of well-being.

Lip augmentation and perioral rejuvenation are popular treatment requests. When performed judiciously and in conjunction with a comprehensive treatment plan, lip treatments can restore an appearance of kindness and generosity to the mouth.

What to expect

Each aesthetic journey is unique. Expectations and budgets vary considerably, and the consultation process is invaluable in creating a manageable and individual treatment plan.

Understanding the treatment plan and budget is essential before commencing any treatment.

Filler treatments usually take 15-20 minutes to perform.

Avoidance of substances that promote bleeding can be helpful to minimize bruising. Alcohol, anti-inflammatories ( such as aspirin and ibuprofen), vitamins, anti-oxidants, fish oil, and omega-3 products should be avoided for up to 72 hours before the treatment if minimizing bruising is an important concern.

Avoidance of routine dental work or dental cleaning for 2-4 weeks following dermal fillers is strongly recommended. Any penetrative skin treatments such as chemical peels or microneedling should similarly be avoided.

In the majority of cases no downtime is to be expected, and an immediate return to the workplace or social engagements is common.
